6 Wedding Dress Shopping Mistakes to Avoid — cover image

Are you worried you’ll make the wrong decision, bring the wrong people or somehow miss the dress that would have been perfect for you?

Honestly, wedding dress shopping doesn’t need to feel that complicated.

After helping hundreds of brides, I’ve noticed that the same wedding dress shopping mistakes appear again and again. They rarely happen because a bride has done anything wrong. Most happen because she feels pressure to make the appointment perfect.

The best thing you can do is arrive ready to explore, listen to your own feelings and allow yourself to enjoy it.

Here are the 6 mistakes I’d encourage every bride to avoid.

1. Shopping before you’re genuinely ready to buy

It’s tempting to begin shopping very early because you’re excited and want to see what suits you. But trying dresses before you’re ready to make a decision can make everything more confusing.

You might find a dress you absolutely love, then tell yourself you must keep looking because your wedding feels too far away.

With off the peg wedding dresses, every dress is available to take home that day. There is usually only one of each, so I cannot promise that a particular dress will still be here months later.

Before booking appointments, ask yourself:

• If I found the right dress today, would I feel ready to say yes?

• Have I decided on a realistic budget?

• Do I know roughly when and where I’m getting married?

You don’t need every wedding detail finalised, but you should feel emotionally and financially ready to choose.

2. Deciding what you want before trying anything on

One of the biggest wedding dress shopping mistakes is arriving with a very strict picture of the dress you think you should wear.

Having ideas is helpful. Refusing to try anything outside them isn’t.

Wedding dresses look completely different on a body than they do on a hanger, model or social media post. A shape you’ve dismissed may give you the waist, support or confidence you were hoping for.

Equally, the dress saved repeatedly on your phone may not make you feel anything once it’s on.

I’ll always listen to what you like, but I may suggest something slightly different because I can see how a particular shape, fabric or neckline could work for you.

You don’t have to love every suggestion. You only need to keep an open mind and be willing to try it.”

3. Bringing too many opinions into the room

I completely understand wanting everyone you love to share the experience. However, too many guests can make it harder to hear the most important opinion in the room, which is yours.

One person wants sleeves. Someone else prefers fitted. Your mum loves lace. Your friend has spotted something she would wear. Suddenly, you’re studying everyone’s expressions before deciding how you feel.

When you look in the mirror, give yourself a moment before turning around.

Ask yourself:

• Do I feel comfortable?

• Do I feel confident?

• Do I recognise myself?

• Do I want to take it off?

That final question tells me a lot. A bride may not cry or make a dramatic announcement, but if she keeps finding reasons to stay in the dress, that’s often very significant.

4. Trying on too many dresses without explaining what’s missing

Trying more dresses doesn’t automatically make the decision easier. Sometimes you’ve already found a dress you love, but there’s one small detail stopping it from feeling perfect.

This is where I need you to talk to me.

Tell me exactly what you feel is missing. It might be:

• Straps or sleeves

• Buttons all the way down the back

• A lower back

• More sparkle or lace

• Extra support around the bust

• A slightly different neckline

You’ll be surprised by how much can sometimes be changed or added by an experienced bridal seamstress.

If you love how a dress makes you feel, don’t dismiss it immediately because of one detail. Ask me whether that part can be altered first.

It may be far easier to add the finishing touch you’re imagining than to continue trying on dress after dress and become completely confused.

Can I tell you a little secret? Your perfect dress doesn’t always begin perfectly. Sometimes it becomes perfect with the right little changes.

5. Believing you must cry when you find your dress

Some brides cry. Some mums cry. Occasionally, everyone cries.

Other brides smile, relax and quietly say, “I think this is it.”

There is no correct reaction.

You might know because you suddenly look more confident. You may start imagining your hair, flowers or walking into your ceremony. You might simply feel comfortable and completely like yourself.

Don’t dismiss a beautiful dress because the room didn’t erupt into tears.

The right dress isn’t measured by how dramatic the reaction is. It’s measured by how you feel when you’re wearing it.

6. Choosing for the body you hope to have

Please don’t punish your current body while shopping for your wedding dress.

You might be planning to lose weight, tone up or feel fitter before the wedding, but your dress should make you feel wonderful now.

Choose something that fits and flatters the person standing in front of the mirror today. A good seamstress can usually take a wedding dress in if your shape changes.

One thing I’d definitely recommend is arranging your seamstress as soon as you buy your dress. Experienced bridal seamstresses become booked surprisingly early. Your first fitting will usually be nearer the wedding, but the appointment should be reserved well in advance.

Also consider how the dress feels when you:

• Sit down

• Walk normally

• Lift your arms

• Take a deep breath

• Imagine wearing it for several hours

Looking beautiful matters, but being able to breathe, move, eat and enjoy your wedding matters too.

FAQs

When should I start wedding dress shopping?

Start when you feel ready to make a decision if you find the right dress. With off the peg dresses, you can take your dress home that day, so you don’t need to allow time for it to be ordered.

How many people should I bring wedding dress shopping?

I recommend bringing no more than 4 people. Choose guests who understand your taste, make you feel confident and will allow you to form your own opinion first.

How many wedding dresses should I try on?

There isn’t a perfect number. Some brides find their dress very quickly, while others need to explore more. Stop when trying more dresses is creating confusion rather than clarity.

What if I love a dress but want to change part of it?

Tell me what feels as though it’s missing. Straps, sleeves, buttons, support and other details can often be added or changed by an experienced bridal seamstress.

What if I don’t cry when I find my wedding dress?

Don’t panic. Plenty of brides don’t cry. Feeling comfortable, confident and reluctant to take the dress off can be just as meaningful as tears.

Should I lose weight before wedding dress shopping?

No. Shop for the body you have now and choose a dress that makes you feel wonderful today. A bridal seamstress can usually adjust the fit if your shape changes.
